Stripped Earflap Hat with braids (free pattern)

This hat is a quick and easy, warm and comfy, hat that is a must have for the winter season.

Supplies needed:
Worsted weight yarn (2 colors) For the two hats shown, I used Red Heart Solids in White, Blue, Red and Black
size K 6.50 mm hook
Hat Pattern:
*using color A, ch 5 and sl st together to form a circle
Row 1: ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout pattern) hdc 9 around and sl st last st into first st (end all rows this way) (10 st)
Row 2: ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st after. (20 st)
Row 3: With color B, ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat 1-2-1-2 pattern around. (30 st)
Row 4: Repeat row 3 (45 st)
Row 5: With color A, repeat row 3 (66 st)
Row 6: Ch 2, 1 hdc in each st around.
Row 7-8: With color B, repeat row 6
Row 9-10: With color A, repeat row 6
Row 11-12: With color B, repeat row 6
Row 13-14: With color A, repeat row 6
Row 15: With color B, repeat row 6
Row 16: (earflap row) ch 2, hdc 22
*ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 8 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 7 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 6 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 5 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 4 hdc*
sl st down earflap toward the front of the hat.
hdc 32, repeat between **
sl st down toward back of hat. hdc to end of row.
Row 17: With color A, 1 hdc in each st around. FO, weave in ends.
For braids:
I cut 24 strands of yarn,12 for each braid. Half of color A and half of color B. You can make them whatever length you want. Mine were about 30 inches each.

  1. I want to make a couple of your hats, I have a stash of Redheart team colors which calls for an US 8 knitting needle and for a crochet hook size 5.5mm Worsted weight. Can you tell me if this yarn will work with your pattern ? Thank You .

    1. Yes! That is the same brand and weight yarn I used to make my hats.
