Striped Hat with flowers

These were a request from a cousin of mine. She sent me a photo of a hat she liked and this is what I came up with. I really like how these turned out. I love the bright colors. I love the fun flowers. These are the first non-chain-daisy flower that I've ever done and I was seriously surprised at how easy they were. I added an extra row to make them bigger and I am very happy with how they turned out.

Happy Friday the 13th! Skull Hat (free pattern)

Yes I'm the weirdo that spends Friday the thirteenth watching scary movies.
I don't believe in bad luck but I do enjoy watching other people get all paranoid about it. Haha, my facebook feed is full of crazy and that is just the way I like it! Since I am in such a good mood I thought I would share another free pattern with you. I actually made this hat and wrote up the pattern like 2 years ago but I never thought about sharing it until today. I've made several hats so I think the pattern is good but if you see any problems, please let me know.
Ok so I call this a skull hat but what I was really trying to do was make a Jack Skellington hat. I’m a little obsessed with Tim Burton and making this hat was a must for me. Problem is, I’ve raised my kiddos to love Nightmare Before Christmas too so they’ve been stealing my hats… Which is why I've made a lot of them  :)

Supplies:
J hook
3 colors worsted weight yarn (each time I’ve made this hat, I’ve used black, white and an accent color)
Now I did 2 versions, One solid (the green one) and one more “holey” (the teal blue one) The directions I have below are for the more solid one. If you like the look of the other one you simply replace every 2 dc with a 1 dc, ch 1
 
Example: (keep in mind for example that the beginning ch 2 counts as first dc)
Row 1: (solid) ch 2, 19 dc into circle, sl st to beginning ch 2 (20 st)
Row 1: (with holes) ch 3, 1 dc, ch1 - 9 times into circle, sl st into beginning ch 2 (20 st)
 
Solid hat will end up feeling a lot wider at the top then the holey one but the bottom of the hat (rim around four head) will measure out the same.
 
Ok now onto the Solid pattern:
*With color A, ch 5 and sl st into a circle.
Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as first dc here and throughout pattern) dc 19 into circle. sl st to starting ch (end all rows this way) (20 st)
Row 2: ch 2, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around. (40 st)
Row 3: Using color C, ch 2, dc in same st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. Repeat 1-2-1-2 pattern around (60 st)
Row 4: ch 2, dc in each st around
Row 5: Using color A, repeat row 4
Row 6: Using color B, repeat row 4
Row 7: Using color A, repeat row 4
Row 8-9: Using color C, repeat row 4
Row 10-12: repeat rows 5 through 7 with same colors
FO, weave in ends.
For Skull face:
Using white, make a magic ring
Row 1: dc 15 into ring
Row 2: ch 2, dc into same st, 2 dc in each st after
Row 3: ch 2, dc into same st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next. repeat 2-2-1-2-2-1 pattern around. FO, pull ring tight and weave in ends.
For eyes (make 2)
Using black, make a magic ring
Row 1: dc 15 into ring
Row 2: ch 2, dc into same st, 2 dc into each st around
FO, pull ring tight and weave in ends
 
NOTE: on the eyes for the “holey” hat, I only did one row. You can make your eyes big or small, it’s really up to your personal preference.
Sew eyes onto skull. Stitch in nose and mouth with black yarn. Sew skull into place on hat and weave in ends.

Heartbeat Skully Hat

I recently got the chance to a test another pattern for the awesome Julie. I’m sure you all remember the awesome sparkler bag… that I accidentally destroyed…Anyways this time, there was no hot wax in sight! I made sure of it  :)
This pattern is so lovely. When I first saw the photos of this hat, I thought “How did she do that?” It’s actually easier then it looks, I promise  :)  The Heartbeat Skully hat is a quick and super cute skull cap. I chose to test this pattern with Halloween colors (Shocker, I know) Actually my son picked them out. I really love the tiny splashes of color peeking through the black. It’s definitely a project I will make again. Included in her directions is the version I made and a longer slouchy version (that I am also making) The pattern is currently available on Ravelry for the low price of just 4 bucks.
My kiddos were in no posing mood so at first I had to use Baby Bear… Then my son got jealous of all the attention baby bear was getting so he let me snap a few of him too  :) (links to pattern are below my photos)

Stripped Earflap Hat with braids (free pattern)

This hat is a quick and easy, warm and comfy, hat that is a must have for the winter season.

Supplies needed:
Worsted weight yarn (2 colors) For the two hats shown, I used Red Heart Solids in White, Blue, Red and Black
size K 6.50 mm hook
Hat Pattern:
*using color A, ch 5 and sl st together to form a circle
Row 1: ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout pattern) hdc 9 around and sl st last st into first st (end all rows this way) (10 st)
Row 2: ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st after. (20 st)
Row 3: With color B, ch 2, 1 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat 1-2-1-2 pattern around. (30 st)
Row 4: Repeat row 3 (45 st)
Row 5: With color A, repeat row 3 (66 st)
Row 6: Ch 2, 1 hdc in each st around.
Row 7-8: With color B, repeat row 6
Row 9-10: With color A, repeat row 6
Row 11-12: With color B, repeat row 6
Row 13-14: With color A, repeat row 6
Row 15: With color B, repeat row 6
Row 16: (earflap row) ch 2, hdc 22
*ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 8 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 7 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 6 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 5 hdc, ch 2, turn.
sk 1 st, 4 hdc*
sl st down earflap toward the front of the hat.
hdc 32, repeat between **
sl st down toward back of hat. hdc to end of row.
Row 17: With color A, 1 hdc in each st around. FO, weave in ends.
For braids:
I cut 24 strands of yarn,12 for each braid. Half of color A and half of color B. You can make them whatever length you want. Mine were about 30 inches each.

Happy Thanks Giving!!! (free hat pattern)

I made this with FANCY YARN  :D   haha, ok maybe it’s not to you but to me it is and I love it. I found it at a cute little knitting shop up near my grandma’s. This stuff is great but let me tell you it is hard trying to think of a project for a skein so tiny. I’m used to between 250 to 300 yards. This one is less then 100. I eventually decided to make a hat because I thought the yarn looked like it would have an awesome self striping effect… and I was right  :)  So I got a super cute hat out of it and I wanted to share the pattern.

This yarn is called Mochi Plus. It is 80% Merino Wool and 20% Nylon… My first Wool!!!! I’m such a nerd, I know  :)  This yarn was not consistent in size. There were some areas that were thicker and some areas that were thinner. Not hugely different but enough to notice. I would classify it as slightly smaller than Worsted weight so if you are using worsted weight for this hat, it may come out a bit too big. Just a warning.

I used a H/8 5.0mm hook …I know, I’ve been favoring this one lately and truthfully I prefer one bigger but this one has a super comfy rubber handle that my Wal-Mart hooks don’t have (got it at the same place near my grandmother’s house) and yes I refer to it as my “fancy hook” so it has become my go to hook.

The abbreviations I use are as follows:
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
 
* ch 6, sl st together to make a circle
Row 1 – ch 1 (counts as first st here and throughout pattern) 1 sc in same st, 2 sc in each st around (12 st)
Row 2 – repeat row 1 (24 st)
Row 3 – ch 1, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next. repeat 1-2-1-2 around (36 st)
Row 4 – ch 2, dc in same st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. repeat 1-2-1-2 around (54 st)
Row 5 – ch 1, sc in each st around
Row 6 – ch 2, 1 dc in next 5 st, 3 dc in next st. repeat 1-1-1-1-1-1-3-1-1-1-1-1-1-3 around (68 st)
Row 7 – ch 1, 1 sc in each st around
Row 8 – ch 2, 1 dc in each st around
Row 9 – repeat row 7
Row 10 – repeat row 8
Row 11 – ch 2, 2 dc in same st (makes shell) sk 2 st, 3 dc in next st. repeat shell pattern around.
Row 12 – repeat row 7
Row 13 – repeat row 8
Row 14 – repeat row 11
Row 15 – repeat row 7
Row 16 – repeat row 7
Row 17 – ch 2, sk 1 st, 1 sc, ch 1, sk 1 st, Repeat *1 sc, ch1, sk 1 st* all around.
Row 18 – repeat row 8
Finish off and weave in ends.

You’ll notice from my hat photos that my row 18 is solid black. That is because this tiny skein ran out on me 1 row too soon so I had to add on some plain black worsted weight. I think you can tell from the photos that the black is a bit larger/thicker then the primary yarn. I really love how it turned out and I wear it all the time.

My crocheted Halloween

This year, my best friend and I dressed up as Day of the Dead sugar skulls. She did a traditional head-dress of flowers. I went for a tiny hat and spider web veil… Which I of course made myself  :)

This year, My bestie and I made trick or treat bags for the kiddos to match their costumes. I already showed you my son’s Hulk bag but I later added a nose and mouth to it so I have to show it off again  :)

Snowflake Hat

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE winter. So when I saw this hat, I had to squeal a little (I know, I do it a lot) It kind of form the same way the spider web hat worked and I wasn’t a fan of having holes in a winter hat so I changed the pattern a bit and made the last half of the hat solid double crochet.
